As the world becomes more digital, data storage has become increasingly important. Applications, media files, documents and networks all rely on secure data storage. Securely storing your servers starts with choosing the right server cabinet. Using a server enclosure to manage your servers is an easy and effective way to protect all your sensitive data.
But how many servers does a cabinet typically hold? Cabinets, or racks, vary in size. Here's a breakdown to determine how many server cabinets your business needs
Standard Server Cabinet Sizes
One of the most common server cabinet sizes is 42 RU, but they can be increased for larger companies or data centers. But what does RU mean? Let's break it down.
RU (sometimes referred to as U) stands for "rack unit" and is a unit of measurement for server cabinets.
An RU is typically 1.75 inches. A 42RU rack will hold 42 1RU units or 21 2RU units.
All hardware manufactured for rack storage is a multiple of RU, ranging from 1RU to 48RU.
Server cabinets range in depth from 36 to 48 inches.
Calculating Server Cabinet Dimensions
When you calculate your server cabinet size, consider whether you need a full-rack or half-rack size. Full racks can be up to 70 RU, but some standard sizes are 42 RU, 44 RU, 45 RU, 48 RU, and 52 RU. If you are in a home office or small business, a half-rack may be sufficient for you. For larger companies, you will probably need at least a few full racks.
The general rule of thumb for calculating the right size server rack for your business needs is to overestimate. Businesses are growing and you may need space sooner than you expect. Be sure to fill any empty spaces with blank panels to ensure proper airflow for your current servers.
